When you travel in Antigua, Guatemala, you will learn much about the art and culture of the area. There are so many art forms that have their basis in the tradition of Guatemala, and the talent of the local artisans finds its way into textiles that combine textures and colors. You will also see shops and studios which are places to find wood working, from pieces large to small.

Guatemalan jewelry, especially pieces made from jade, are utilized in collections and exhibitions, and some is worn by locals. The ceramics made by local craftsmen show their own variety of mayolica-type pottery, and this is a specialty of the area.

You can’t go anywhere in Antigua without feeling the culture and tradition of this ancient area. Religious expressions are visible throughout the year, particularly during the catholic masses of Holy Week. Their music also adds to the culture, including the genres of jazz and classical music.

You’ll find many schools in the area that teach Spanish, and they are geared to many peoples, including students from other countries. The country itself is a democratic republic with a constitution and 22 departments. The local municipalities have city councils or mayors that are elected by popular vote.
